HOWTO Install a Typical Network Concierge System
This document captures the process of installing and
configuring a typical Network Concierge system. For the purposes of this
sample installation/configuration HOWTO document, we will define a typical
system to be an x86 166MHz, 16MB, 2GB system with a single internal NIC/HUB
card for LAN (Intranet) connectivity and an internal 56K / external ISDN
modem for WAN (Internet) connectivity. The actual system specifications of
the PC used for this example were:
Generic PC BOX:
Pentium
200 MHz MMX
16MB
Memory
2.1GB
Hard Disk
CD &
Floppy Drive
Internal
4-Port Hub Card (LAN/Intranet)
External Motorola BitSurfr Pro ISDN Modem (WAN/Internet)
To start the installation process insert the software
CD on the Windows installation host machine which should present you with
the Network Concierge online installation/support environment if autorun is
enabled. From the main screen click on the question mark which will open
the installation/information list. You can select the Installation Guide
entry and you will be presented with a list of options. Please
browse/familiarize yourself with this content. A screenshot of this
follows:

At this juncture I will assume that the hardware,
network requirements have been satisfied and jump straight into the SW
installation process by invoking the installation utility. The typical
installation configuration is to network two PCs, a windows install client
host system and a dedicated target system to which the Network Concierge SW
will be transferred. Upon invoking the install utility you will be
presented with the following screen shot. The software installation steps
are as follows:
Step 1: Create Boot Disk by leaving the
box blank and clicking on the “Next” button.

Step 2: Fill in the appropriate
information and click “Next”.

Step 3: Select how the Network Concierge Box will be
used. A small business solution where it manages the a new network/segment
or a work group solution where it plugs into an existing network. In this
example the Network Concierge is being used as an Internet gateway server.
The automatic mode which utilizes intranet IP masquerading is used in this
case. Click “Next” to proceed.

Step 4: Follow the instructions and
create a Network Concierge Book Disk. Insert the floppy into the Windows
client system and click “Next”.

Step 6: You will be notified that the
boot disk was created successfully. Click OK.

Step 7: Remove the boot disk from the floppy drive
and insert it into the target Network Concierge floppy drive. Now reboot or
power-on the network concierge system. The Network Concierge will boot up
from the boot disk and wait to communicate with the install host over the
network. Now on the client install host machine click the “Next” button
to initiate communication between the two systems. NOTE: The Network
Concierge box may take a minute or two to boot up of the boot disk and will
not see any progress activity on the following chart until they establish
communication.

Step 9: Once the establish communication you will be
asked to select the destination drive where the software will be installed.
For a first-time installation you need to use the default “Install” action.
We also recommend that you use /dev/hda. Click OK to start installation.

Step 10: You will see transfer and
progress activity similar to the following when you kick of the software
installation process.

Step 11: Another sample screen shot
showing transfer and progress activity.

Step 12: Once the software installation completes you
will be notified and prompted to remove the boot disk from the Network
Concierge. After you remove the boot disk and reboot, the Network Concierge
will boot off the newly installed hard disk. Click OK and wait a few
minutes for the Network Concierge to boot.

Step 13: Once the Network Concierge has booted you will configure it via
the client’s IE or Netscape browser. You can access the concierge by using
the concierge’s hostname or 192.168.0.1 as the URL address and be presented
with the following main page.
Step 14: Click OK to proceed.

Step 15: Click OK to use the Wizard to
help you setup the concierge.

Step 16: Click Continue to proceed.
Note the default password as you will be prompted to enter it.

Step 17: Logon as concierge
administrator and click OK. Use default password mentioned above. You can
modify the password later on.

Step 17: You will then be presented with a
configuration steplist for setting up the Network Concierge server. You can
enable/disable any item except the first one, which will require you to
license the Network Concierge SW. NOTE: A 15-day evaluation license is
auto-generated if you do not have a valid registration key. Once you’ve
selected the steps you wish to perform you click the “BEGIN” button which
will walk you through the configuration process.

Step 18: See the
HOWTO_configure_NCBOX.doc document for the process of
configuring a typical Network Concierge system. This information has been
captured in separate documents to minimize the size of the files.
Step 19: You will get the following
notification after completion of NCBOX configuration. Click OK.

Step 20: You’ll see the StepList with
the completed steps checkmarked. Click Exit.

Step 21: NOTE: The browser main page may reflect an
invalid license message after configuring the system. This is stale
information which will be corrected if you simply “Refresh” the browser
window. The Network Concierge is now configured and ready to provide
services.

Step 22: Click on the Network Neighborhood ICON and
you should see you client machine(s) and the concierge. In this example,
Cambridge was an NT 4.0 WS client & Hollywood was the concierge. You can
click on either ICON to access shareable network resources.

Step 23: Click on the concierge “Hollywood” ICON and
you will see the two user shares bradybunch and public, a BradyWeb webshare
for a virtual web server that was configured, a network printer NCP1, and a
CD folder “OCT98MS” which reflects the volume name of the CD. The CD share
(folder) appears automatically when the CD is inserted. You can access its
contents by clicking on the share. NOTE: The “Scheduled Tasks” is an NT
specific, non-functional, placeholder share.
