HOWTO Configure a Typical Network Concierge System

This document captures the process of configuring a typical Network Concierge system.  For the purposes of this sample installation/configuration HOWTO document, we will define a typical system to be an x86 166MHz, 16MB,  2GB system with a single internal NIC/HUB card for LAN (Intranet) connectivity and an internal 56K / external ISDN modem  for WAN (Internet) connectivity.  The actual system specifications of the PC used for this example were:

                Generic PC BOX:

                                Pentium 200 MHz MMX

                                16MB Memory

                                2.1GB Hard Disk

                                CD & Floppy Drive

                                Internal 4-Port Hub Card  (LAN/Intranet)

External Motorola BitSurfr Pro ISDN Modem (WAN/Internet)

Step 1:  You configure the Network Concierge system via the client’s IE or Netscape version 4+ browsers.  You can access the concierge by using the concierge’s hostname or assigned IP address (e.g., 192.168.0.1 for automatic mode) as the URL address.  Upon entering it you will be presented with the following main page.

Step 2:  Click OK to proceed.

Step 3:  Click OK to use the Wizard to help you setup the concierge.

Step 4:  Click Continue to proceed.  Note the default password, as you will later be prompted to enter it.

Step 5:  Logon as concierge administrator and click OK.  Use default password mentioned above.  You can modify the password later on.

Step 6:  You

will then be presented with a configuration steplist for setting up the Network Concierge server.  You can enable/disable any item except the first one, which will require you to license the Network Concierge SW.  NOTE:  A 15-day evaluation license is auto-generated if you do not have a valid registration key and want to test drive the software before purchasing license.

Step 7:  Click OK.  Informational message only.

Step 8:  Enter your license registration key and click on “Next Step” to advance.

Step 9: Set the current time on the Network Concierge box.  You can click on the “Update from local machine” button to use client machine time settings.  NOTE: You will have to manually select you time zone setting.  Once entered click on “Next Step” to advance.

Step 10: Informational screen on definition of Network Concierge accounts and passwords.  Click on “Continue” to advance.

Step 11:  Modify the concierge administrator account password and click on “Fwd” to advance.

Step 12:   Modify the root account password and click “Fwd” to advance.  As an appliance box that is administered via a browser user interface, you normally would need to logon as root.  In addition, this root account is only accessible via the Network Concierge Linux console which would require that you attach a keyboard and monitor to the Network Concierge box.

Step 13: This should have been defined during installation.  Click “Fwd” to advance.

Step 14:  Since we are using automatic mode, do not change, leave it alone and click the “Fwd” button to advance.

Step 15:  Click “Next Step” since domain name was setup during installation.

Step 16:  Move “Fwd” since not using a NIC for Internet connection.

Step 17:  Configure the dial-out connection since using a modem for Internet access.  Select “Yes …” and click the “Fwd” button.

Step 18:  The Network Concierge software will probe to determine if finds a Hayes compatible analog or  ISDN modem on COM1 or COM2.  If it detects a modem it will query the administrator whether to configure this modem.  Click “OK” to configure modem.  In this example, it detected the externally connected (via serial port) Motorola BitSURFR PRO ISDN modem.

Step 19:  Enter appropriate dial-out modem entry information.  In this case you would only need to enter an appropriate comment since the other fields had default field values.  Click “Fwd” to advance.

Step 20:  Fill in the appropriate information and click “Fwd” to advance.  NOTE:  In this example, an additional parameter “&D2” was added to have the modem auto-disconnect if the DTR goes away.

Step 21:  Click “Fwd” to advance.  If you had a second modem (e.g., internal Diamond SupraExpress 56K) on COM2 you would queried that a Hayes compatible modem found on COM2 like the message in step 18.

Step 22:  Click “OK” to define connection.

Step 23:  Enter unique dial-out connection name and comment.  Click “Fwd”.

Step 24:  Select/associate modem with dial-out connection entry.

Step 25:  Enter phone number and outside line prefix if required.  Use a local number so that you do rack up long distance charges.  Click “Fwd”.

Step 26: Enter the account username and password. You probably do not need to enter connection server name.  If you are unsure ask your ISP for this information.  Click “Fwd”.

Step 27:  You probably do not require a connection script for login purposes.  If you do, contact your ISP for this information.  Click “Fwd”.

Step 28:  Enter idle dial-out connection timeout value or use default.  Click “Fwd”.

Step 29:  Use default server assigned address setting unless a static IP is required by ISP prior to establishing a connection.  Click “Fwd”.

Step 30:  Enter domain name server (DNS) entries recommended by you ISP.  Click “Fwd”.

Step 31:  Upon completion of adding dial-out connection you are returned to the following screen where you can either add another dial-out connection or simply advance by clicking “Fwd”.

Step 32:  Select simple mode to enable the selected dial-out connection.  Click “Next Step”.

Step 33:  Add a user by clicking the “Add” button.

Step 34:  Enter user name and password.  This creates a Network Concierge user that is used to authenticate share resource access.  In addition, a mail account of type user@domain_name is automatically created if you want to use the concierge as a mail server.  Continue and add all users and Click “Fwd”.  For this example all 9 BradyBunch characters were added before moving forward.

Step 35:  Once you have finished adding users click on the “Next Step” button.

Step 36: From the Set Shares screen you can add a new user by clicking the “Add” button.

Step 37:  To add a new file share, enter a name and specify default/user access privileges.  Click “Fwd”.

Step 38: After the folder has been added click “Next Step” to proceed.

Step 39:  Click on the “Add” button to setup a web server.

Step 40:  Enter the web server  name and click “Fwd”.

Step 41:  Specify web server access mode.  In this case only accessible via the Intranet side.  Click the “Fwd” button to advance to next screen.

Step 42:  Enter the web server share name and its access privileges.  Click on “Fwd” to advance.

Step 43:   Use default web user setting and click “Fwd”.

Step 44: Install the Microsoft FrontPage Extensions on web server by clicking on checkbox and move forward.

Step 45:  Enter administrator and password information required when using Microsoft FrontPage extensions.  Click “Fwd” .

Step 46:  Click “Next Step” to finish adding web servers.

Step 47:  For this example, an HP printer is connected to LPT1 so the first checkbox is selected.  Click “Fwd” to advance.

Step 48:  Specify the network printer name to be used and select driver.  You can use the default setting shown and add the client driver by clicking on the concierge’s Network Neighborhood printer icon.  Click “Fwd” to advance.

Step 49:  Click on the “Configure” button to finish.
